[000 FOREWORD]

Hi all,

Thanks so much for taking the time to review more of my work. I selected this list of projects as an attempt to focus on breadth rather than expertise. My goal here was to showcase my ability to tackle many problems using a variety of tools with a focus on design. My biggest professional strength is my ability to teach myself virtually anything and hopefully this selection of projects showcases that. I included some graphic design, generative design (with code), custom typography, album artwork, video, photography, Augmented Reality, 3D modeling as well as UX/UI and web design. As a quick note, I should add this page is very gif heavy in order to showcase motion more effectively and might take some time to load.

You can find my personal work at www.chloedesaulles.com

Again, thank you for considering me for this position!

Cheers,
Chloé Desaulles

[001 ‘SPREAD OF BACTERIA FROM RESPIRATORY DROPLETS’ KINECTIC POSTER]

Kinectic data visualization depicting the spread of bacteria from respiratory droplets created after the photograph by Dr. Richard David from the Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center which was widely circulated online. The animation for this poster was made with code and then edited in illustrator and photoshop.

[002 ‘DESIRE PATHS’ KINECTIC ALBUM PROMO]

Kinectic album cover and promo for ‘Desire Paths,’  title which describes “a path created as a consequence of foot traffic, which usually represents the shortest or most easily navigated route between an origin and destination.” The background visuals are made using a ‘voronoi algorithm’ which works by computing the shortest distance between any given mass (i.E. the mathematical version of a desire path).

[004 ‘DEDICATIONS I-V’ ]

Dedications I-V is a short film composed of individual tales on memory as told by people with progressive memory loss. The short is based on neuroscience research, suggesting that memories can be made more resistant to degenerative disorders through the use of active recall. Through this method, the film is meant to act as a visual document of the protagonists’ memories, as well as a tool to strengthen them. This short was made using depth data with depthkit, the kinectv2 and unity, taking advantage of the medium’s loss of frames and visual inaccuracy to contribute to an already fading narrative. According to Scatter co-founder James George, it is also the longest film ever created using Depthkit.

[005 THIVAL INNOVATION AND MUSIC FESTIVAL - JROD MAINSTAGE VISUALS]

Pittsburgh’s 16,000 attendee Thrival festival commissioned me to create main stage visuals for emerging artist ‘JROD.’ As the festival took place halloween weekend, I created a set using 50s horror film footage and altered the video using code.

[006 THRIVAL INNOVATION AND MUSIC FESTIVAL PASS COMMISSION]

I was commissioned by the rapidly growing festival back in 2017 to create their line of artist/press passes and access writsbands. That year, festival performers included artists such as Wiz Khalifa or TOKiMONSTA. As a wink to the festival’s tech background, as well as to their steel industry roots (Thrival is based in Pittsburgh and takes place at the iconic Carrie Furnaces), I decided to create a pass which utilized 3D modeling technology visualized through a mask of the furnace’s architecture. The decision to show the structure of the 3D model by using it’s wireframe as an overlay was also an intentional conceptual decision linking back to industrialization. The 3D models were made from photographs of candy such as gummy bears, butterscotch and twizzlers.

[007 NONFICTION RESEARCH MICROSITE] In progress.

Interactive microsite illustrating the company’s innovative market research findings on emotions and playlist building. Inspired by song progress bars and playlist boxy structure, all the while respecting the company’s pre-established style guide. For this project, I attempted to make effective use of transitions between sections to reflect and elevate the content, tangential to how a good playlist should ‘flow.’ I created all visuals assets for the site, and chose to redesign all text assets (tweets, text conversations etc.) using the company’s signature font and linework.

[008 LEUCOTHOE’S STORY]

Two part image illustrating Leucothoe’s tale. According to greek mythology, Leucothoe was so beautiful even the sun fell in love. Not being able to stand living without her, the sun transforms to walk the earth in an embodiment of her father. Once alone with her, he reveals himself in his true form and violates her. Her father now deeming her unpure and unworthy of marriage decides to bury her alive. The sun, heartbroken, turns her into a tree so her branches will forever turn towards him.

[009 THOUSAND FELL AND STUDIO INSTITUTE FACE FILTERS]

The AR filters were comissioned for the sneaker brand’s launch and for personal studio use. The LFG design was conceptualized by Nate Brown and built by yours truly, the TF filters were original designs playing with signature traits of the brand’s identity. Unfortunately the ‘LFG: 2020 NRG FEELS GOOD’ screen recording could have aged more gracefully...

[010 SPLAY APP UI/UX]

Social media app by the studio Splay, made with the intention to be used by only 20 select people (specifically targeting creative directors, athletes, and entertainers). I can’t talk about this project in detail due to NDAs, but here are some early user profile iterations. You can also check out the app on the apple store if you’re curious to learn more ! Did a lot of work referencing old school swiss typography, as well as early internet aesthetics.

[011 DASH GEORGE VISUAL CONTENT]
Work in progress.

DASH GEORGE is an up and coming NYC rapper working on her first album, which will exist as a larger audio-visual piece of work. I have been commisioned by her to create a few music videos for the project, and have additionally helped her with some photographic promo content. The album will be released sometime this fall. The work is still underway, but here are a couple early iterations for the Mariah Carey music video, which will entail a chatroulette-type dating platform.

[013 INFINITE CITIES] Work in progress.

Infinite Cities is a personal print and computational design project made in 2019. It is inspired and based on the novel Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, which tells the story of the traveller Marco Polo and his reports on the cities he sees during his travels.

Through text analysis, I created a computer program which uses Calvino’s text and generates an infinte amount of new stories by mimicking the structure  within the book and using excerpts from the original text.

The project is intended for print and will be accompanied by generative maps of these fictional cities created with code.
